The Dome is the expression of absolute beauty: it is covered with red terracotta tiles, it is divided in eight parts bordered by white ribs and surmounted by the white Carrara marble lantern. In 1420 the great architect Filippo Brunelleschi designed an innovative and brilliant structure with a double shell for this dome that is the biggest ever built in masonry. It is the highest panoramic spot in Florence: it has a total height of 117 meters and an external diameter of 55 meters and is therefore visible from 70 km away.
